Various cool drum performances today on America's Top 40.
First up, a long distance dedication...an English guitarist that sounds too wierd for popular consumtion but he uses a great drummer Gary Husband on his recordings. This is an old Tony Williams tune that he played on and he played with his trio in 2000 featuring gary Husband on espresso and drums.

Next up, an old drum standard performed by one of the drum legends recreated by Bill Bruford in his own inimitable style.

Steve Smith used to play with hitmakers Journey and played on such hits as Separate Ways and Faithfully. Here he gets together an actual jazz band and plays his own tunes that he wrote. These are some cuts from their first recording, Vital Information.

I took and mastered the first 2 Vital Info records from very clean vinyl for Steve Smith. He loaded them into his iPOD.

Benrand - thanks for the tunes, as always!!!
I really hope those first three Vital Info albums ("Vital Info," "Orion," and "Global Beat") become available somehow or other. I've got everything from "FiaFiaga" through "Show 'Em Where You Live."

THX again, BR
Husband is DA MAANN.
I might have another boot mp3 of a diff-but-still-killer perf of PC somewhere, BR...if i find it, maybe i can e it to you?
I have the 1st Vital Info & Fiafiaga on vinyl , Orion & Global Beat on cassette tp [ even worse - can you say, "hisss?"] , & VitaLive on DISC [ta-daahh!! ]...
The 1st album is autog'd by SS, Coster, Landers, & saxist Wilczewski; pretty cool, if u r into the autog thing, i guess...it has sent. value to me anyway...
All are great...
Altho Stv can overplay a bit, that Vitalive still has some burnin' schadt on there..."Perfect Date" [both on there & the orig studio version off Fiafiaga] is a smokin' cut...
I wish SS'd somehow put those 1st ones on disc [from the masters or a copy, if he possesses them, perhaps?] for mail order on his site, i think he'd get plenty of interest over the net....

Thanks Benrand...
Gary a Unsung Hero indeed, I love his linear approach. That Bruford Clip taken from the 1st Bruford/Moraz album is taking me back in time... Boy was that concert ever GOOD!! Great tribute to Max Roach on that one.

Yeah. Is it just me, but it almost sounded as if Neil too was "tippin' his hat" to "the Drum Also Waltzes" in a section of his Show of Hands solo AW ;=)

Bruford is carving out his own niche in the world of jazz coming from a prog background like Peart, but he plays completely different than him or any of those guys, a totally different approach a la Tony Williams or Billy Cobham. Bruford was/is a trickier, singular drummer with more interesting phrasing than Neil as i'm sure most would notice. He's also one of the very few drummers i've heard who shares the distinction of actually writing good "solo" albums, even if they sound abit outdated for today's standards("One of a Kind" for example or the records with UK/Yes/King Crimson)
His duet with Sean Malone on "The Brook and the Ocean" is marvelous, especially the solo Bill takes at the end, the way he constructs the solo against the theme/vamp and embellishes it and Sean's playing and tone has echos of Jaco's influence.

I am still listening to Holdsworth's clip...
Gary's playing on the edge of his seat (in a good way), totally coming from the heart (Bozzio ) and it comes out. So I am here hanging on the edge of my seat just listening to it... GREAT TUNE!! That's one thing Gary and Vinnie have in common, being able to instantly respond to Holdsworth's intricate and out of this world rythmical ideas.
